Officers responded around 10:30 a.m. after receiving a 911 call reporting an assault at the Walmart on Harrison Avenue. Authorities found a 43-year-old man inside the store with a “deep laceration to the back of his head,” police said.

He was taken to University Hospital in Newark for treatment of his injury and later released.

“Preliminary information indicates that the victim was involved in an argument with another adult man who then struck the victim in the head with a machete,” investigators said in a statement. “The suspect fled the store before police arrived.”

Officials said the weapon used in the attack was left at the scene and recovered by authorities. Late Friday, police said a man had been arrested in Newark in connection to the incident. He was not immediately identified.

Police continue to investigate.
