Junior Lorenza Pitts, 40, of Gadsden, was charged with first-degree robbery, first-degree assault and unlawful possession of a controlled substance, according to Etowah County Sheriff Jonathon Horton.

The sheriff said deputies were called to a road outside Gadsden after a report of a man in the roadway covered in blood, WBMA-TV reported.

The victim, identified as Danny Lee Chamblee, told deputies he had been attacked by a man with a machete, according to the television station.

Descriptions of the assailant by witnesses led deputies to a person of interest within 30 minutes, WAAY-TV reported. The person, later identified as Pitts, was taken into custody and is being held at the Etowah County Detention Center, according to Etowah County Sheriff’s Office online booking records.

Bail for Pitts was set at $300,000, the sheriff’s office said.

According to the sheriff’s office, Chamblee is in stable condition after undergoing surgery, WBMA reported.
