‘I don’t talk to the police, sir:’ Body cam videos show Jacksonville officer-involved shooting

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Newly released body camera video shows the moments that led up to an officer-involved shooting that took place in the early morning on January 8 at the intersection of Lem Turner Road and Dunn Avenue.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office uploaded videos to its YouTube page on Thursday. One video, which is about 15 minutes long, is the body camera video from the officer who was interacting with the driver, who JSO identifies as Officer A. The second video, which is about eight minutes long, is from the body camera of the officer who was keeping watch of the passengers in the car, who JSO identifies as Officer B.

The approximately 15-minute long clip begins with Officer A pulling a white car over as his body camera is rolling in the parking lot of Big Chief Tire.

That officer says he stopped the car because the driver made a U-turn while a light was red. The driver then says he and his passengers were trying to go to Walmart, but found that it was closed.

“I thought that just because the light was red and that there was no one coming I could actually make that U-turn,” the man driving the car tells the officer.

That officer then tells the driver, “OK, so when it’s a red arrow, it basically means don’t go.”

In the video, the driver is very cooperative with the officer, allowing the officer to search him for a weapon and showing him a photo of his medical marijuana card on his phone.

The driver tells the Officer A his driver’s license is at home, so the officer has him sit in the back of his patrol car. The officer did not put handcuffs on the driver.

While Officer A is questioning the driver, the second officer (Officer B) can be heard on his own body camera asking the passenger in the back seat on the passenger’s side of the car to roll the window down.

The male passenger does so and also tells Officer B they were headed to Walmart “to change a tire” on another car.

“How you doing tonight?” the passenger asks the officer.

“I’m doing all right, how are you?” the officer replies.

“OK,” the man replies.

Officer B asks the passengers if they know about any weapons inside the vehicle, besides the knife that the officer sees.

‘I don’t talk to the police, sir’

Officer B then asks the passenger in the front seat to roll the window down.

“I don’t talk to the police, sir. I’m a passenger,” the man replies.

“OK,” the officer replies. “Can you just roll the window down for me? You don’t need to talk to me.”

“I’m a passenger, sir,” the man replies.

“No, hey, don’t go reaching in your pockets, alright?” Officer B said.

“I’m a passenger, sir,” the man repeats.

The officer tells the man it’s OK if he doesn’t want to talk to him, he just wants him to roll the window down.

“Got to talk to the driver, sir,” the man responds.

Officer A then walks back over to the white car to talk to the front seat passenger, who was wearing a bulletproof vest. The officer asks the man if he has a medical marijuana card.

The passenger replies, “Sir, I don’t answer any questions, sir.”

‘I got a weapon on me, sir’

The officer then asks the man to step out of the car several times. He does not, and the officer eventually pulls the man out of the car to handcuff him.

On the video, an extended magazine from the gun in the man’s pocket can be seen.

“I can show you my identification, bud,” the man tells the officer.

Officer B tells a man sitting in the back seat on the driver’s side to “stop reaching” and the man says, “I’m not reaching.”

“Keep both your hands up just like you’re doing now,” another officer can be heard telling the man.

“I got a weapon on me, sir,” the man tells the officer.

“I know you got one,” the officer replies.

The officer is working to handcuff the man when a car horn honks.

“Hey! Hey! Stop!” Officer B yells.

“Pull your gun out!” Officer A yells.

‘Don’t (expletive) move your hands’

The passenger took a swing at the officer, broke free and began running, and that’s when he opened fire.

Numerous shots can be heard on the video, both the passenger’s shots and the officers returning fire.

In the Officer B’s video, the suspect can be seen injured, down on the ground, lying in the middle of Lem Turner Road.

Another officer who responds after shots are fired asks, “Is he Signal Zero?” which means “Is he armed?”

Officer B says, “Yep, he’s laying on it.”

The other officer tells the suspect, “Don’t (expletive) move your hands.”

Officer B tells the suspect, “You will get shot if you move, OK?”

“Yes sir,” the suspect responds.

The other officer then handcuffs the suspect.

JSO also released a 30-second clip from Big Chief Tire’s security cameras, showing the moments the suspect ran away and opened fire on the officers.

According to JSO’s Transparency page, where officer-involved shootings are tracked, the suspect is 27-year-old Teronnie Austin Wade.

Wade is listed in JSO’s online Inmate Information Search as being in the Duval County Jail. According to these records, Wade is facing charges that include resisting officer with violence, two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and possession of a weapon by a felon.

He is not eligible for bond and his next court date is set for Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 9 a.m.
