Tyre Nichols death: Sheriff says 2 deputies relieved of duty after showing up at arrest

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said that two deputies have been relieved of duty after they were seen at Tyre Nichols’ arrest.

Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner Jr. on Twitter Friday night that he has launched an investigation into “the conduct of these deputies to determine what occurred” and if the deputies had violated any policies.

“Having watched the videotape for the first time tonight, I have concerns about two deputies who appeared on the scene following the physical confrontation between police and Tyre Nichols,” Bonner said.

Bonner shared the update following the release of the videos from the Memphis Police Department Friday evening of Nichols’ arrest on Jan. 7. Five officers in Memphis were fired and have since been charged

Bonner said that both of the deputies have been relieved of their duty as of Friday, according to WHBQ.

The investigation is ongoing. No further information has been released.
