Is Blockbuster coming back? Internet is abuzz with speculation

Blockbuster movie nights – does that bring you back to a simpler time?

Following the quiet return of the video rental store’s website over the weekend, nostalgic fans took to social media to speculate.

Reporting for FOX 13 News, Alexa Mae Asperin says the seemingly active website now shows off a “couple different messages in the standard yellow Blockbuster font against the iconic blue background.”

On mobile, you see a message saying, “Please be kind while we rewind”. If you are on your desktop, you will see, “We are working on rewinding your movie”. However, Asperin reports that no other context was released.

Asperin adds that according to the website, Blockbuster is owned by Dish Network, which owns a number of franchise agreements for the brand.

“The website has been dark since the brand declared bankruptcy over a decade ago,” Asperin explains. “A popular staple of the 1990s and 2000s, Blockbuster once boasted over 9,000 locations.”

Today, there is only one location left in Bend, Oregon, which was featured in a 2020 documentary called “The Last Blockbuster”.

While no one knows for sure what the resurrection of Blockbuster’s website means yet, social media is abuzz with theories.
