The Internal Revenue Service recently announced that educators can deduct up to $300 for the supplies they have to personally buy for their classrooms.

The $300 is in addition to a standard deduction, the IRS said.

The amount has gone up from $250, which was the maximum amount allowed from 2002 through 2021.

If a couple is married and file jointly, and both are teachers, then they can deduct up to $600 total, but no more than $300 each, the IRS said.

The amount able to be claimed will go up by $50 each year based on inflation.

To qualify, the taxpayer must be a kindergarten through 12th-grade teacher, instructor, counselor, principal or aide who works at least 900 hours during the school year in either a public or private school, the IRS said.

Educators can deduct the unreimbursed cost of:

  • Classroom books.
  • Classroom supplies and materials.
  • Equipment including hardware, software and services.
  • COVID-19 protection such as face masks, disinfectants, hand soap, hand sanitizer, gloves, tape to mark off social distancing.
  • Professional development courses.
